Mistakes in the print helped an auctioneer recognize this hardback as part of a limited run of just 500 copies from its initial release.

Daniel Pearce, who operates NLB Auctions in Paignton, Devon, discovered the book among the belongings of a deceased individual in Brixham.

He remarked, "This is our most significant discovery. The family is overjoyed; they had no idea this would happen... The funds will be crucial for them, and it's been sitting on a shelf for two decades."

"It's a dream come true for many," Mr. Pearce remarked.

He recounted his surprise at discovering a valuable item while browsing through a property.

The book in question was perched atop a heap of discarded belongings, set aside for disposal.

Mr. Pearce revealed that this particular copy belonged to the very first print run, where 200 copies were allocated to bookstores and an additional 300 were sent to libraries.

"This one is part of that 300 batch. Being a library edition, it's in excellent shape considering its age," he noted.

He emphasized, "Typically, these editions show significant wear, with damaged spines, but this one remains intact."

On the first page, he pointed out a £2 pencil mark, indicating the price at which the library offered it during checkouts.

A noticeable error on the back cover, where "philosopher's" is misspelled, further confirms its status as a first edition.

"It lacks the 'o' at the end," he explained.

Additionally, he mentioned that first editions have unique features, such as the title line displaying numbers from 10 down to one on the initial pages.

Mr. Pearce shared that another copy in similar condition fetched an impressive £42,000 at auction last November, fees included.

"There are still a few of these treasures out there," he added confidently.

"I truly believe they represent some of the most valuable contemporary first editions available today."
